Copper plate is a material that can be made by smelting copper ore in a furnace, or cast by a foundry. The copper plate's use is small in early game, so many players underestimate how much production capacity they will need. In the later game, copper use picks up heavily with the mass production of electronic circuits, and other resources that consume copper. However, copper use will usually still be less than iron plate use, throughout the game.
