Steel axes are tools used for the manual mining of resources, for cutting trees, and for collecting items deployed on the ground (so they be placed elsewhere). They can also be used for melee fighting when the player is out of ammo.
They are used throughout the game after Steel processing becomes available, primarily to move deployed items, since automatic mining of resources with drills is far easier and trees tend to be cleared in the early part of the game.
It is possible to stack multiple Steel axes in the tool slot.
