An Engine unit is used for building various vehicles, such as trains and cars. This variant burns fuel to run, but there's also a more advanced and expensive Electric engine unit. Engine units must be built using an assembler, and cannot be made by hand.
Optimized time/item usage: 2 Pipe factory + 1 Iron gear wheel factory → 20 Engine unit factories, as of version 0.15.
Since 0.15.0, engines are also required as an ingredient in the Science pack 3 recipe.
