The lightning collector is an upgraded version of the lightning rod from Fulgora
that protects a larger area from getting struck by lightning, as well as converting each strike to more electricity than its counterpart. Like the lightning rod, the peak power production is limited only by the demands of the connected electric system, but the internal storage is subject to a 150 MW drain in addition to the load from the electric system.
Also like the lightning rod, the lightning collector cannot be crafted on any planet other than Fulgora, due to the other planets' lack of a strong magnetic field.
This page will only cover behaviors and quantities unique to lightning collectors. See the page for lightning rod for mechanics shared by both entities.
Coverage
For reference, a large island on Fulgora can be ~25 chunks, requiring between ~4 - 16 lightning rods depending on rod quality, tiling, and island shape.
Tiling Options
An equilateral triangular tiling is most efficient as this maximizes circle packing when arranged in a hexagonal tiling. For all lightning rods a nearly equilateral triangle of base: 2 x building_reach and height: 0.87 x building_reach will work and provide plenty of flexibility to move the vertices to accommodate interference from buildings. If flexibility is not needed, one can stretch out the size of each tile to the maximums described below.
Keep in mind that these are center-to-center distances. The gap between collectors will be 2 less than these.
Net Efficiency
For a grid of connected lightning rods with 30 chunks in range, the following table shows an estimate for maximum sustainable night-time power and the net efficiency of the collectors. See net efficiency for definitions and further explanation.
Note that this is sustainable night-time power. Halve this to obtain sustainable power over the entire day (requires accumulators).
