Object description

The electric furnace is the third and last tier of furnace. As its name implies, it uses electricity rather than fuel to operate, removing the need for a fuel belt.

The electric furnace smelts items at the same speed as a steel furnace, and also has two slots for modules. However, it is slightly larger than the other two tiers of furnaces; it occupies a 3×3 area instead of a 2×2 area.

When it is first unlocked, the electric furnace is not significantly better than the steel furnace. It does not consume fuel and produces less pollution (1 versus 4), but this is offset by the fact that it requires twice as much energy (180 kW versus 90 kW). If electricity is primarily generated by boilers (1.8 MW for 30 pollution), then each electric furnace effectively produces an additional 3 pollution for a total of 4/m, which negates the benefit. It also requires more space and resources to build.

The electric furnace becomes much better with more unlocked technologies, especially modules and more effective ways of producing power. It is also required for smelting on space platforms, since burner devices do not operate in space.
