When attached directly to a space platform hub on a space platform or to a cargo landing pad, the cargo bay expands the inventory capacity of the attached structure. Note that items can not be inserted into the cargo bay, nor can they be pulled from it; they must be inserted and removed directly from the edges of the hub. The cargo bay can't be deconstructed if the inventory of the hub or landing pad is too full to lose the additional space provided by the cargo bay.
Although the inventory size bonus is significantly less useful for a cargo landing pad compared to a similar number of chests, each cargo bay also increases the number of cargo pods that can be received from a space platform at the same time, which can improve the overall item throughput of bases that rely on frequent orbital supply drops.
Unlike most structures, the cargo bay snaps to a 2x2 grid and can only be connected to a space platform hub or cargo landing pad by either 2 tiles or 4 tiles.
