Gates are a new feature included in the Alpha 0.11.0 update. They are used as a save opening in walls, that only the player can pass by. There are different graphics for normal gates and train gates. Gates can have different sizes.
Mechanics
Gates open automatically when a train in automatic mode of the same force gets close to a gate it wants to pass. When it is in manual mode all gates of the same force that are close to the train will open.
