Burner devices are devices that burn Fuel to operate instead of relying on Electricity.

Burner devices are typically used early in the game before an Electric system has been constructed. They can also be used later in the game in remote locations where electrical power would be difficult to set up. Vehicles are necessarily all burner devices.

Burner devices tend to be significant sources of Pollution.

Note that this list does not include anything that consumes Fuel as an ingredient to build other items. For example, a Plastic factory consumes Coal, but it does not count as a burner device.

Device Notes
Burner inserter Burner inserters that are moving Fuel will supply themselves with that Fuel automatically if they are running low. Unlike electrical inserters, they do not burn Fuel when idle, so they are useful for situations where they are used rarely (e.g., unloading an Electric engine unit factory.)
Burner mining drill Burner mining drills do not supply themselves if they are mining coal. They pollute 11% more than Electric mining drills, and the electric ones can have their pollution further reduced through modules.

Inserter arms will also take unused fuel out of Boilers. This makes them good filters for Fuel items early in the game, before Smart Inserters are available. In addition, you can chain-feed boilers by alternating Inserters and Boilers.
Stone furnace Stone furnaces pollute twice as much as Electric furnaces.
Steel furnace Steel furnaces pollute four times as much as Electric furnaces.
Diesel locomotive Besides having inserters in a train station to load and unload cargo from Cargo wagons, build inserters next to each Diesel locomotive in a station to refuel them. Otherwise the train will grind to a halt at some random track location.

Cars are usually fueled manually. It's a good idea to stick a few extra Fuel units in the trunk, as well. Solid fuel will require replacing less often.
