Alien artifacts (also known as "Alien eggs") can only be obtained by destroying alien spawners. They are needed for some very powerful high tech equipment, but mainly for production of Alien science packs. Artifacts can be collected by holding the "Pick up items" key (default F) and moving over them or by using robots to "deconstruct".
