Most recipes that either require or provide a fluid other than crude oil is produced here. The chemical plant has 2 inputs and 2 outputs (once again - can't modify them). Solid items are both inserted and removed by Inserters from any point (no need to target fluid input/output slots).
Processes Heavy oil into Lubricant (requirement for Electric engine), make Sulfur, Sulfuric Acid, Plastic (requirement for Advanced Electronic Circuits), Battery and turn any Oil byproducts into Solid fuel (See Fuel to compare that with other types), and also crack oil byproducts into lighter oil byproducts.
