The '''heat pipe''' can transport heat over longer distances and connect devices which produce and use heat. Currently this is limited to [[Heat exchanger|heat exchangers]] and [[Nuclear reactor|nuclear reactors]].

Heat pipes have a heat capacity of 1 MJ/C. Thus, they can theoretically buffer 500 MJ of heat energy across their working range of 500C to 1000C, making them a space-efficient energy store. However, because temperature needs a drop of greater than 1 degree before it will "flow," you can't raise them all the way to 1000C or drain them all the way to 500C, so the practical energy capacity will depend on the layout.

The ''boiler'' is used to convert [[Water]] into [[Steam]]. When [[Fuel|fueled]] it converts feed water into steam at 165 degrees, matching the maximum temperature of the [[Steam_engine|Steam Engine]]. Boilers have 2 water connectors, allowing them to pass feed water through to other adjacent equipment but only 1 steam connector.

1 unit of steam is produced for each unit of water. Fuel is consumed at 50% efficiency, which means that a single unit of [[Coal]] (8MJ) fed into a boiler and then utilised in a steam engine will result in 4MJ of energy added to an electrical system.

Boilers are the main source of pollution in the early and midgame.

== Inserter can take from boiler ==

You can insert into boilers, but also take fuel out. See [http://www.factorioforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=6008&start=30#p64343 this post] and follow ups.

This can be also used to create an early filter-device, which filters only fuel items: One inserter inserts into a boiler (not connected to water) another take the fuel out.

== Direction of transfer ==

Heat pipes currently are directional and feed heat well in one direction and poorly in the other. There is no way of visually identifying which way a heat pipe is laid so care must be taken to place them in order, starting from the reactors and working towards the heat sinks. They are therefore unsuitable for placement by [[construction robot|construction bots]].

I have several questions about formatting.
# Should I bold titles? In some articles titles are bold (eg. [[Pistol]], [[Wooden chest]]) and in some aren't (eg. [[Land mine]], [[Rocket launcher]]).
# Should I put spaces between header begining, ending and text (eg. [[Rocket launcher]] and [[Burner mining drill]] - there are spaces in "History" header, but no in "See also" header)?
And is [[Template:EquipNav]] redundant? Only some translated articles are using it ([[Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:EquipNav]]) and this template doesn't include icons. As for the spacing, again, not really defined. You may put what you think looks the best for the page content in question. The Equipnav template is actually outdated (I should probably delete it), instead we use a system that organizes pages by their ingame organization, aka [[Template:ProductionNav]], [[Template:IntermediateNav]], [[Template:CombatNav]], and [[Template:LogisticsNav]]. == Small Pump changes ==

Hi Gangsir,
I'm new here and new to wiki editing, so bear with me for a moment. I've been working on updating the [[small pump]] page to reflect it's new capabilities in 0.15.x but it really needs to be moved to [[pump]] to reflect the entity's name change.
At present I'm not comfortable making that move as I don't understand the implications, can you either move it or advise me on the plan below.

I believe what needs to happen is:
* Move the existing [[pump]] page to a new temporary location
* Move the [[small pump]] page to [[pump]]
* reformat the old pump page into a disambiguation page or combine it's content into the top of the new pump page
* find and fix broken links

And most importantly, thanks for having me and including me in the community :)

A '''Pump''' is a multipurpose fluid handling device which can be used to move fluids, perform flow control, prevent back-flow and load/unload trains.

The pump can be seen as the inserter for liquids.

== Using as a Pump ==

When connected to pipes on both ends of the pump and powered, the pump will transfer fluid from the source side to the output side if it will fit. This will occur even if the input side has significantly lower fluid levels.

Note that the pump can't mix different kinds of liquids.

== Using as Valve ==

The pump works as a valve:

* When powered, the pump will let liquids through, but only in its set direction.
* If unpowered, the pump doesn't let anything through.
* If the pump is powered but has a circuit condition, it will only let fluids through when the condition is met.
: This can be used to control some parts of your factory. For example, with a single wire from a Lubricant tank to a Small Pump pumping Heavy Oil, you can disable cracking Heavy -> Light Oil when Lubricant is needed.

== Loading/unloading fluid wagons ==

Pumps can load and unload [[fluid wagon|fluid wagons]] at [[Train stop|train stops]]. When a pump is placed with either end facing a rail track and the other end connected to a pipe, it will visually change. When a fluid wagon is stopped adjacent, the pump head will connect to the top of the nearest tank and begin transferring fluids.

The '''Alien Science Pack''', also known as the "purple potion", is consumed by [[Lab|Labs]] to [[research]] the most advanced [[technologies]]. It can only be crafted from [[Alien artifact]]s, which are found in the ruins of enemy [[Spawners]].

Tips:
* Depending on difficulty and playstyle, it may be hard to get the first [[Alien artifact]]s. A way to get the most research out of the collected artifacts is to use an [[Assembling machine 3]] with four [[Productivity module 2]]s loaded, to generate the most Alien Science Packs possible. Once the [[Productivity module 3]] has been researched, the module 2s can be replaced with 3s for even better productivity.
** Using Productivity modules in [[Lab]]s can also decrease the number of Alien Science Packs required, but due to time and energy tradeoffs this is generally not recommended unless acquiring artifacts is causing extreme problems.

The '''nuclear reactor''' generates heat by burning [[uranium fuel cell]]s. The heat can be used in a [[heat exchanger]] to produce steam which can be used to generate power.

Instead of completely consuming the fuel, burning fuel in a nuclear reactor results in [[used up uranium fuel cell]]s. These used up cells can be [[nuclear fuel reprocessing|reprocessed]] in a [[centrifuge]] to get back some of the uranium used to create the fuel cells.

Reactors receive an adjacency bonus for adjacent operating reactors, which increases their effective thermal output by 100% per link. This means that 2 reactors operating next to each other will output a total of 160MW thermal, with each reactor producing 40MW base and receiving 40MW of adjacency bonus. Un-fueled reactors do not confer any bonus.
