Which Solid Fuel recipe to use
On 05:05, 19 June 2016‎, Hamburger changed the adjusted ratio (Heavy Oil to Solid Fuel) from 2:1,5 to 1,3:1.

"Heavy Oil has a much worse ratio (2:1) and should be cracked into Light Oil first instead. The cracking process changes the ratio for Heavy Oil to 1.3:1, which is much better."

I think the old ratio of 1,5 : 1 was correct. Let me recap this in short:

2 Heavy Oil : 1 Solid Fuel
style="text-align:right;" | ->
2 Heavy Oil : 1,5 Light Oil

style="text-align:right;" | ->
1,5 Light Oil : 1,5 Solid Fuel

style="text-align:right;" | ->
= 2 Heavy Oil : 1,5 Solid Fuel

Correct me if I miscalculated. Otherwise, I will change the Page in few days.

Reply
That is not so much a miscalculation as a miscomparison. Here's an alternate breakdown:

2 Heavy Oil : 1 Solid Fuel
OR
2 Heavy Oil : 1.5 Light Oil
style="text-align:right;" | ->
1.5 Light Oil : 1.5 Solid Fuel

style="text-align:right;" | ->
2.0 Heavy Oil : 1.5 Solid Fuel

style="text-align:right;" |
= 4.0 Heavy Oil : 3.0 Solid Fuel

style="text-align:right;" |
= 1.3 Heavy Oil : 1.0 Solid Fuel

You must use the ratio of Heavy Oil to one Solid Fuel, which is either (2:1) or (1.3:1).

The 1.3 is 1.3333333, obviously, one and a third. It rounds to 1.3.

To get (1.5:1) it looks like you are leaving the (1.3:1) expressed as (2:1.5), and then comparing the 1.5 Solid Fuel from one ratio to 1 Solid Fuel from the other ratio. But that doesn't make sense, you can't ratio Solid Fuel to Solid Fuel.

Player equipment
Tools
Tools determine the mining speed of the player. This is true not only for resources, but for any deployed object the player is picking up. Iron Axes are the first available manufactured tool. Once Steel Processing is researched, the better Steel Axe is available.

Iron and steel axes can also be used as melee weapons if the player is out of ammo. Bare hands cannot, which is why the 'None' item has no damage.
Weapons
Weapons are used to inflict damage to alien lifeforms and buildings. As tools only provide damage at close range, weapons should be used in any case. All weapons will consume ammo when fired. For some weapons multiple ammo types are usable; they differ in cost and inflicted damage.

Hamburger: Expanded concept of sender and receiver devices and reworded some 'you'-based verbiage.

Languages
Circuit networks are built using red or green wire, and enable the control of receiver devices, based upon information broadcast onto the network by connected sender devices. Most senders are storage devices, and broadcast their information onto a specific channel, based on the item or liquid the storage device contains. Each circuit network contains a channel for every kind of item, as well as 45 extra Virtual signals which act as user-definable channels.

:

Physical network structure
A circuit network consists only of those devices connected together with the same color wire. Wire can be strung directly from device to device, or across any intervening power poles.

Note that each connected set of wires forms a separate network. For example, it's entirely possible to have four red-wire networks and three green-wire networks. Red and green networks will remain separate and do not link up if red and green wires happen to touch the same power pole or device.

* To connect wires to a power pole, drag the wire to the base of the pole.
* To erase a wire connection, drag the same color wire over an existing connection.
* To remove all connections from a power pole, shift-click on the pole. The first shift-click will remove all electrical connections, and the second will remove all red and green wires.
* When connecting to a Arithmetic Combinator or Decider Combinator, take care to drag the wire to the correct input or output side.

Broadcast Information
Sending devices broadcast the amount of Items or Fluids they contain or other data definable by the player. Each amount is broadcast as a numeric value on a 'channel' corresponding to the item they contain. For example, a Storage Tank containing 1000 Crude Oil will broadcast 1000 on the Crude Oil channel.

Multiple broadcasts of the same item or fluid are additive: if there are two connected Storage Tanks with 1000 Crude Oil each, the value of the Crude Oil channel will be 2000.

Wires which are connected together by a junction will pass their signals to the other wires of the same color. For example, if two red wires are connected to the same combinator input, each wire receives the content from the other. This can result in feedback if care is not taken; see Feedback (under Arithmetic Combinator, below) for discussion.

Use of Information
Receiving devices can use broadcast information, in most cases to enable/disable the device.

They can either compare results between different channels, or compare a channel to a specific value. The pictured inserter works if the count of Iron plates is lower than the count of Steel plates.

Receiving devices sum all signals from each wire connected to them, even red and green wires. For example, if an inserter is connected to a red wire carrying a signal for 20 iron plates, a green wire with 10 copper plates and another green wire with 5 iron plates, the input signal set for that receiver will be 25 iron plates and 10 copper plates.

Basic
The simplest network is to connect a smart inserter with a chest next to it, to control the amount of items in the chest.
(Note that you do not have to connect them using a power pole as the picture shows; you can connect them directly.)

Combinators
Combinators can function as both receiving and sending devices and allow more advanced functions to be used on a circuit network.

*The Constant Combinator broadcasts up to 15 values on any of the channels for whatever networks it is connected to. (You cannot currently specify whether a value should be red or green; if you need different values, use two combinators, one for each color wire.) You can use any item channel or any of the virtual signal channels.
**Note that using two of the 15 slots to broadcast values on the same channel is the same as broadcasting the sum of the two values from one slot.

*The Arithmetic Combinator performs arithmetic operations on input values and broadcasts the result to the specified output channel. The input and output channels can be any item channel or any of the virtual signal channels.
** Connecting: The Arithmetic Combinator connects to a red or green network on its input side (the terminals are set into the main body and look like spark plugs) and performs an arithmetic calculation which is broadcast into the specified channel on its output side (the output wires appear to stretch out a bit from the body of the device).
** Feedback: Note that the input network and the output network are not the same network. Connecting the output network back to the input network will result in a feedback loop. For example, adding 1 to the value for Copper Plates and broadcasting it as Copper Plates is an action that results in an infinite loop if output is connected back to input. The value for Copper Plates will rapidly (but not instantly) shoot upward. This technique can be combined with Decider Combinator logic to make electronic clocks, gates, and other systems; see Combinator Tutorial for advanced techniques.
** Each: This combinator can use the 'Each' signal for both input and output, in which case all non-zero input channels will have the combinator's operation performed and broadcast on the output side. Having Each signals for input and output and using a non-changing operation (like adding zero) is equivalent to having a 'one-way' wire; all the information from the input network is copied to the output network, but the reverse is not true.
**Multi-network: The Arithmetic Combinator can be joined to both red and green networks on the input side and will sum their inputs.

*The Decider Combinator functions much like an Arithmetic Combinator, but is designed to compare values. In terms of Connecting, Feedback, and the Each signal it functions as specified above. In addition, it can handle the Everything and Anything signals, and performs more complex functions than summing when attached to multiple networks. See the Decider Combinator page for more details on how to use this.

Logistic Network
The Logistic network used by Logistic Robots is essentially a third network (a wireless one), along with the green and red wired network. The Logistic Network is based on proximity to a central Roboport.

Some devices can also be connected to the logistic network. If a device has conditions set for circuit and for logistic network, it will become activated if both conditions are true.

See Logistic network for more information.

Items/Devices
In v0.13 the factorio developers made many devices connectable to the circuit network, so there are many possibilities to control and program your factory based on conditions.
__NOTOC__

The Diesel locomotive is the engine for movement of trains over track. Trains are useful for moving large amounts of items over large distances.

Locomotives are also good vehicles for the player to reach fixed destinations, as they are considerably faster than the Car or Tank. Naturally they do not have the same freedom of movement, however, as they are confined to the track.

Locomotives are burner devices and require fuel to run. Despite the name, they can take any fuel, not just oil-derived types.

While Locomotives can be assembled by hand, the Engine units for it require automated construction to build, so it cannot be built from raw materials by hand.

Driving Controls
These are the default bindings. They can be changed in the Options menu.

Note that while you can enter a train at any point, you must enter a Locomotive to drive the train manually (and automatic mode must be off).

Connecting/Disconnecting a Locomotive
To connect Locomotives or Cargo wagons to each other, either place the cars next to each other on the track (there will be an outlined green connection), or, to connect an already existing disconnected car, drive the Locomotive near the car and press G by default. To disconnect the last car in a train, press V by default.

Defense
Locomotives are a priority target of Enemies, so places where trains can stop should be defended. Locomotives in transit can usually crash through everything in the way (including Biters, Tanks, and the Player) so defense in transit is less important. However, enemies can attack and destroy rails, potentially stopping the train.

Construction robots are a good way to automatically repair damage at train stations.
The Cargo wagon is used in conjunction with Diesel locomotives to form Trains for the Railway network.

A wagon is used to transport items and can be filled and emptied like a chest, but with many more inserters at the same time. Up to 12 inserters per wagon are possible (from both sides).
The Inserter item stack size is important to fill the wagon fast!

Cargo wagons can only be filled or emptied when they are not moving. A spot where inserters are prepositioned to transfer cargo for wagons is called a train station.

Stack limitation
Wagons have a stack limitation option the same way chests do, which is useful if you need to limit the number of transported items for some reason.

Stack filter
Each stack in the cargo wagon can be filtered. This works in the same way as the quick bar (toolbelt); the default key to define or remove the filter is the middle mouse button.

This can be used to transport different items in one wagon. For example, you could transport both empty and full oil barrels in one wagon; at the train stations, the barrels would be handled using smart inserters for each kind of barrel. This is discussed in the forum thread [http://www.factorioforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=68288&p=53467&hilit=Filter#p53467 Tired of babysitting expansions? == Compressing items ==

A cargo wagon can be filled with 2000 items of ores (copper, iron, coal...) or 4000 items of processed plates (copper plates, iron plates, steel). This makes preprocessing your ores into plates (near the mines) a useful strategy, before you transport it to your factory. See by Pre-production for a more detailed discussion of this concept.

Use as big chest
It is possible to use the cargo wagon as a "big chest": Place rails, put an unmoving wagon on it and inserters around. The advantages of this construction are:
* Cargo can be transferred with many more inserters than with a chest, bypassing the limitations of the inserter stack size bonus.
* Items are transported instantly over the length of the wagon. Correctly configured, this is faster than a transport belt.

For examples of this, see these forum threads:
* Solar panel factory

Before a train moves to a target Train stop, it calculates the best route based on the railway network at that time.

For calculation it uses a simple A*-algorithm, with the following special weighting-rules:
* When the rail block is occupied by a train -> Add a penalty of 2 * length of the block divided by block distance from the start, so the far away occupied paths don't matter much.
* When there is a train waiting in the station -> Add a penalty of 6 tiles per every remaining second in the station. (This also helps the train to choose the best station even when all of them are occupied).

The route is recalculated if the train would need to stop. There is an invisible front point called the train_stop_point which is used to determine if the train needs to stop. See Debug mode and turn show_train_stop_point on, to see that point. The route also recalculated after a train has stopped on a signal.

History
The current algorithm was introduced with v0.11.11.

<i>For the research see Railway (research)</i>

The Railway is one of the main transport methods in Factorio. Although the installation of such an network is sometimes complicated and takes a large amount of resources and space, it is especially over large distances more efficient and faster than belts and robot logistics.

Besides the use as transportation medium, trains can be quite enjoyable to drive!

Railway construction, however, is not understood in an instant. It takes some time to learn the basics, such as automating transportation. Learning how to manage and upkeep a larger train network can take quite some time and a large amount of experience.

Starting a network
This section covers how to build tracks, assemble trains, and get moving. This enables manual transportation of material and player transit over large distances using trains and covers the earliest iteration of railway tech.
; Railway/Tutorials
: Sometimes a picture/video says more than a thousand words.
; not cross the tracks
: A train is very fast, take care! Entering/exiting a moving train is possible, but dangerous.
; Vehicle/Train/Defence
: Defend, as trains are a priority target of Enemies.

Tracks
straight-rail || curved-rail |-
The backbone of the player's rail system has to be built out of the two basic elements (straight/curve) manually. According to FFF #113/#114 update thirteen will include a build-by-drag feature to make building tracks easier and faster.

Rails can be placed in a two-Tile area only. Keep this in mind when planning train stations.

Curves
To create a 90 degree turn two Curved rails and one Straight rail are needed. The Straight rail has to be placed along the end of the first curved rail placed to cover the gap between the second Curved rail.

Switches
* There is no optical sign for a working switch. The player must place a Curved rail overlapping on a Straight rail (or vice versa) to form a switch. In other words: The player can create 3-way-switches at nearly every point of their track by mixing curves with straight rails.
* The crossing of two straight tracks is not usable as switch, but they do connect signal blocks making it possible to prevent collisions.
* Parallel tracks do not interact with each other and generally have no problem, however, switching from one track to the other can require extra resources because the track has to turn away from the other parallel track then turn back to it. This can create complicated networks of signals and as such the player may wish not to build parallel tracks unless they are permanent.

Other
* Use the debug-mode (Press F6) to see and understand better, how the tracks are bound together
* FFF #113 Better Rail Building: http://www.factorio.com/blog/post/fff-113
Trains
diesel-locomotive || cargo-wagon |-

* A train consists of at least one locomotive, but the player may add additional locomotives to keep the train moving at max speed, allow it to move in both directions efficiently and automatically, or they may add Cargo wagons to transport goods with the train.
* Locomotives may be manually driven forward or backward, however, locomotives are generally much slower going backwards. The left and right movement keys are used to change direction at switches.
* Automatic driving is only possible when a locomotive is facing towards the station the train is moving towards. This can be counteracted by having a locomotive facing either direction on a rail, or adding a loop along the rail somewhere. Note that in a loop signals can misbehave due to detecting trains before they arrive.
* A train needs fuel to drive. Fuel can be added by inserters.

The locomotives' inventory is only used for Fuel. To transport items Cargo wagons have to be attached to the train. To attach a Cargo wagon, the player may either prepare to place one near an existing train, where a green graphic will show the player that the cargo wagon will be attached, showing a connection between the train and the new wagon. Alternatively, the player may manually connect cargo wagons to trains with the stock connect key, if the cargo wagon was placed far away from a train. The cargo wagons can be filled manually or by adjacent inserters.

Expanding the rail system
This section covers items used to make trains automatically transport items between stations. The player should be familiar with the "Starting a rail system" Section to fully employ these strategies.

Automated rail transportation
Train-stop |-
; Train stop
: The item that marks the position for the locomotive to stop.
; Train Station
: The complete facility around one or more Train stops generally includes un/loading machinery, defense structures, refueling/repair installations.

Track Layout
For track layout there are 2 common options on how to operate:
;Circular - higher efficiency in large networks
: Trains move only in one direction driving a circle
: requires turning loops
: extremely powerful when using a "two-track" layout, one track for each direction
: high chance of gridlocks when not signaled properly

;Linear - easier to setup, cheaper at beginning
: Trains drive in two directions on the same track
: lower cost for tracks, but minimum of 2 engines per train
: high waiting times when operating multiple trains

Train stop
* The train will search for a path to stop with the Train stop on its right hand side in driving direction
* At least two Train stops are needed to make a train drive between them. Installing a single Train stop would result in trains stopping at that station, without moving further.

Schedule
* When left-clicking on the locomotive the player can set up a schedule:
* add the desired Train stops to the route in correct order
* adjust the wait time for each Train stop individual
* to start the train, enable "automatic mode"

Troubleshooting
Train doesn't move
* Is the train fueled?
* Is the train facing the right direction?
* Is another train in the same block?

No path
* Is the track working properly?
* Is the next Train stop placed on right-hand side?
* Are signals set correctly, if any?
* Is a signal reading the location of the train before it moves?
----

Rail signals
rail-signal || rail-chain-signal |-

Understanding rail signals can be difficult. Several terms critical to understanding them are below:
; Rail segment
: A piece of track (one item). There are just Straight rail and Curved rail.
; Segment
: A single path of continuous rails, a track without intersections or switches. This becomes important when Signals are employed. The player may check the number of the current segment by mousing over a segment.
; Block

: A set of segments defined by rail signals. By default every connected segment belongs to one block, no matter whether a train can drive on it or not, and even if it can be driven only in one direction (for example a joining switch: the other segment of the switch belongs to the same block!). The player can see the current block numbers of a rail piece in the info section. See also this forum post for a good explanation about blocks.

As rail signals are used to employ multiple trains automatically note that driving a train manually ignores most of the rules described here. Driving a train manually on an automated network is possible and other automatic trains will follow signaling indicted by the player's movement. Sometimes it will be not possible to avoid a collision for automatic trains when the player ignores red/yellow signals, so be prepared for disaster.

;The most basic rules:

#There is at maximum one Train in a block at any time.
#A red signal means that the following block is occupied by a train.
#A yellow signal means that a train is approaching, and already has the approval to enter the following block.
#Rail signals separate a new block and reflect its state: green - free, yellow - to be occupied by approaching train, red - occupied
#Rail chain signals separate a new block and reflect the state of the next Rail signal
#A train can only pass a signal if it is to the right of the track and will only pass a signal on the left if there is a signal on the right side as well.

Relationship to OpenTTD
Factorio's railway system works basically exactly like the block signals in Open Traffic Tycoon Deluxe. Players who have ever played that game will find some elements of it in Factorio. If not, they can learn from the openttd documentation.

* v0.8, Inglés Inzainia Plays: Factorio ver 0.8.0 EP:8 (Trains, Trains, Trains!!!)

Principios
* Red ferroviaria/Raster of tracks: Los raíles pueden ser colocados en Rail items can be placed in a two-square-raster only; the tracks needs two Tiles width! For an advanced gameplay (for example if you make plans for a train station, before you researched trains) it is important, that you can place tracks only on even tile-coordinates. You can see the coordinates, if you turn on debug-mode with F5.

Trenes
* Vehículo/Tren: Place a locomotive and wagon close to each other on the track.

Varios trenes
* Red ferroviaria/Varios trenes: Dirige varios trenes a muchas estaciones en grandes distancias.
